Kathmandu, October 20
The Decision Review System (DRS) will be used for the first time in the third edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL), the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) announced on Tuesday.
CAN confirmed the development through its social media channels, marking a significant technological upgrade for Nepal’s franchise-based T20 tournament.
CAN Secretary Paras Khadka had earlier said the association was working to introduce DRS in the competition for the first time. Technology trials had been completed with two companies, with the final decision dependent on an assessment of their accuracy.
According to CAN, the system will include full 3D ball tracking for leg-before-wicket (LBW) reviews. Reviews will also be available for run-outs, stumpings and no-balls.
The technology package will also feature AI-powered edge detection to determine whether the ball has made contact with the bat. Additional features will include measurements of wide deliveries based on height, the distance and height of sixes, and other bowling analytics.
DRS is widely used in international cricket to allow teams to challenge on-field umpiring decisions. It can help overturn decisions that have incorrectly given a batter out or ruled a batter not out, as well as assist in reviewing other key decisions.
The introduction of the system is expected to improve decision-making and bring the NPL closer to the technological standards used in major international cricket competitions.
