Kathmandu, April 26
A government building located in Nagarjun Municipality–1 is being cleaned to provide temporary shelter for landless squatters.
Preparations are underway to accommodate the squatters in one of the three buildings constructed during the tenure of then Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai.

Since Saturday morning, 14 workers have been engaged in cleaning and painting the building.
Electrical repairs are ongoing, including the installation of lights in rooms that currently lack electricity. The rooms are designed so that each family can stay separately, with small three-room units and a toilet on each floor.

However, the building currently does not have a water supply. The beds placed in the rooms during the earlier period are usable only to a limited extent. Some toilets can be used only after repairs.
The building, which falls under the Department of Building Construction, previously housed victims of the 2015 earthquake. It has remained vacant since then.

The five-storey building has 42 rooms, where the squatters are expected to be accommodated. The building also houses the office of the Raniban Nasidhoka Drinking Water and Sanitation Users Committee in three rooms.
Committee chair Lal Kumar Lama said they have not yet received any notice to vacate the office. A yoga program has been operating in the ground-floor hall, and no instruction has been given to vacate that space either.
