House adjourned till April 5; National Assembly Vice-Chair poll on April 6

The first meeting of the newly elected House of Representatives concluded on Thursday, with the next meeting scheduled for April 5 at 11:00 am.

Presiding over the session, the senior-most member, Arjun Narsingh KC announced the adjournment. The meeting, held at the multipurpose hall of the under-construction Federal Parliament building in Singha Durbar, marked the first sitting following the February 21 elections.

The session witnessed brief obstruction by lawmakers of the CPN-UML, who protested the arrest of party chair KP Sharma Oli and former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak. UML lawmaker Guru Baral demanded their immediate release before proceedings resumed.

During the meeting, a message from President Ram Chandra Paudel regarding the appointment of Balen Shah as Prime Minister was read out. Leaders from major parties, including Rabi Lamichhane, Bhishmaraj Angdembe, Ram Bahadur Thapa, Barshaman Pun, Harka Sampang Rai, Gyanendra Bahadur Shahi, and independent lawmaker Mahabir Pun addressed the House.

Home Minister Sudan Gurung tabled ordinances issued by the previous government.

Separately, National Assembly Chair Narayan Prasad Dahal announced that the election for Vice-Chair will be held on April 6, while elections for vacant committee chairs are scheduled for April 7.
