Supreme Court strikes down ban on government ads in private media

Kathmandu, July 14

The Supreme Court has overturned the government’s decision to implement a single-channel system for publishing government advertisements. On Tuesday, a bench of Justices Sharanga Subedi and Nripadhwaj Niraula ordered the decision to be annulled.

The current government had decided that government advertisements would be published and broadcast only through state-owned media outlets. The Nepal Media Society had approached the Supreme Court, arguing that the directive issued by the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers was against the interests of both public and private media.

The Supreme Court has ruled that the circular issued by the Prime Minister’s Office should be voided. Further details of the decision have not yet been made public.
