Bhotekoshi flood leaves Nuwakot towns, infrastructure in ruins

The devastating flood in the Bhotekoshi River has caused extensive physical damage in Nuwakot, destroying riverside settlements, towns and critical infrastructure along the Trishuli River.

Several settlements along the Trishuli have been severely damaged, with homes and other structures swept into the river within moments. Buildings that survived the force of the flood are now left dangerously exposed, with large sections of land beneath their foundations washed away by riverbank erosion.

The flood has eroded the ground up to the foundations of several buildings, leaving the structures at risk of collapse. Once-bustling riverside areas of Trishuli, Dhunge Bazaar and Devighat have been transformed into stretches of debris and sand.

Major hydropower projects in the area have also suffered extensive damage. The uncontrolled flow of the river swept away project infrastructure, causing significant losses.

With hydropower infrastructure damaged, electricity services have been completely disrupted in Nuwakot, further worsening daily life for people in the flood-affected areas.

Army deploys more than a dozen helicopters for rescue

With road access disrupted by flooding and erosion, aerial rescue operations are being used to evacuate stranded residents.

The Nepal Army’s Maithili Barracks in Damki, Bidur Municipality-4, has been designated as a major base for the rescue operation.

More than a dozen helicopters are being continuously deployed to evacuate people stranded in affected areas and move them to safety. The rescue operation, led by the Nepal Army, has provided a vital lifeline to those cut off by the disaster.

Around 1,500 families displaced

The disaster has displaced thousands of people in Nuwakot.

According to Nuwakot Chief District Officer Shambhu Prasad Regmi, around 1,500 families have been displaced by the flood in the district alone.

Families who have lost their homes and belongings are now waiting for safe shelter and relief assistance.

Onlinekhabar journalist Shankar Giri captured the devastation in flood-hit areas including Trishuli, Dhunge Bazaar and Devighat, documenting structures reduced to rubble and major infrastructure destroyed by the flood.
