NRB warns of scams involving PM’s Disaster Relief Fund

Nepal Rastra Bank has urged the public to be cautious when donating to the Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund, warning of scams involving fake bank accounts and QR codes.

The central bank has advised people to use only QR codes and bank account numbers obtained from official sources to avoid fraud.

The warning comes after reports of unauthorised fundraising and fraud using fake QR codes and bank account details in the name of the fund.

The central bank has urged donors to verify the account name before transferring money through mobile banking, digital wallets, ConnectIPS or any other payment platform.

It has also advised people to carefully enter the amount they intend to contribute and verify the transaction before making the transfer.

According to Nepal Rastra Bank, donors can avoid scams by using only the official bank account details published on the websites of Nepal Rastra Bank, the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, or the Ministry of Finance.

The central bank has also warned people not to scan unauthorised QR codes shared through social media, email or messaging apps.

It has urged the public not to share their one-time passwords (OTPs), PINs or passwords with anyone.

Anyone who believes they have been defrauded while transferring money to the fund has been advised to immediately notify their bank or financial institution, payment service provider, the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau, or the Financial Consumer Protection Unit of Nepal Rastra Bank.
